A Hilly and Photogenic Day-Zaton to Trogir
We get an early start on our ride to Trogir. I open the apartment door and look out to the garden and see this.
One can’t have too many neighborhood cats!
The ride starts with a climb towards the town of Sibenik. There are beautiful views of the inlet which Zaton is at the head of.
Zaton above.
We cross this bridge and ride the final couple of miles to Sibenik. Approaching the town, we get some great views of the old town.
The old town is truly spectacular. The cathedral is one of the most interesting ones I have ever seen. I loved the heads that wrapped around part of it. I read that they represented many of the townspeople at the time of the construction.
We stop for a coffee and a pastry as we didn’t have breakfast yet and the cat gods are still with us.
We continue on and there are some climbs today. Today almost felt like a day in central Italy with some real hills! However, there is much to see. We pass through some quaint villages. We had a distant view of this island which was once the most populated island in Croatia. The inhabitants many hundreds of years ago were seeking refuge from some marauding neighbor so this was a safer place. Today there is only 1500 people on it.
The phenomenon of all the rock walls continues today. So many rock walls! The drystone walls are called gromace. In order to grow crops the rocks had to be moved just like in New England.
Here are some grape vines planted amongst the rocks.
We finally arrive in Trogir and are famished. Forty miles on one croissant was a challenge for me. So before we even enter the old town we stop for a full sit down late lunch which was delightful.
Then we make our way to our apartment and the owner sees us coming and he welcomes us warmly. Once again we are embraced with Croatian hospitality. Mario talks fast and is quite a comedian. He tells us his family has lived in this house for 700 years. He asks us if we would like his mother to make us some Turkish coffee. Of course, we say yes. And he seats us in the little courtyard in front of the apartment and we are introduced to our first cup of Turkish coffee. It is thick with grounds at the bottom but very good.
The apartment is behind Jim with the green shutters.
He has us put our bikes in his Mom’s house and go to our apartment to clean up before we check out the city.
Trogir is another real jewel. A world unesco site as well and full of magnificent buildings, a bustling port and lively bars and restaurants.
This is the picture above our bed.
Then when walking around town we see this. I am very confused.
All happy moments aside Trogir has been a big hit.
Incredible architecture. I would have never made is on one croissant!
