Into Each Life Some Rain Must Fall - from Gubbio to Piobbico to Carpegna

We were anticipating some cold rainy riding in the days to come.  The forecast from Gubbio was a hard steady rain in the morning.  We awoke to find the forecast had been completely changed overnight to no rain until later in the day.  It was cold and crisp but I am finding I really enjoy these cool days on the bike.

The ride was delightful.  We climbed over 3200 feet on our way to Piobbico and there was some 20 percent grades involved. We got all the way to Appechio before it started raining.

We passed through several small communities and lots of rural countryside.

Jim who was a ways ahead of me saw this friendly Italian mutt running towards him across a large field. Apparently he was smiling the whole way, showing his teeth and immediately upon reaching Jim exposed his belly for Jim to scratch. He was a real sweetie.

Upon arriving in Appechio we had to decide whether to book it to Piobbico or stop for lunch.  We opted for lunch since we were going to be wet so we might as well be wet and have a good meal.  So we did have a good meal and then did the final seven miles in a cold steady rain.

The next day had an ominous weather forecast too but the morning conditions didn’t look too awful.   The day went from cloudy to sunny to rain to sunny to rain to hail and this cycle repeated many times over the day.  It was only a 26 mile ride but we managed to get in 3700 feet of climbing.   It was a constant putting on the rain gear, removing the rain gear and repeat many times over!   The scenery was truly breathtaking the whole day and I think the rain and the peeks of sunshine and the menacing skies really added to the beauty.

We passed through some attractive towns but didn’t linger too long because of the rain and cold but we did stop for a coffee and pastry in Sant’ Angelo in Vado.

Looking back at the town.

The scenery was gorgeous the entire day with one spectacular ridge view after another.

We were happy to get to our bnb in Carpegna.

The host was very kind and we purchased a very nice bottle of wine from him to go with our pasta we were going to prepare.

Clothes strung out on the radiators to dry and a hot shower and life is good. Even some goofy looking cats came along with the apartment.

  2. I remember Piobbico. We had some rain coming in to there with you from the north if I remember. Visited the Society of Ugly People, right?
