Chapter 3 - Family Chronicles Spello Days

We leave Spoleto to go to Spello where we will base out of for the kid’s final days in Italy.  We send the kid’s luggage ahead by a limo service so we can all ride together across the valley on the bike trail to Spello.

We check into our respective apartments.  Brad and Anna in a cozy little apartment on a quiet side street and Elliott, Jim and I into an apartment on Piazza Kennedy which was fabulous for people watching with its grand balcony overlooking all the action below.

And the views weren’t too shabby either.

The rental bikes got a workout as we used them about every day.  Here are Brad and Anna arriving one morning for our daily exploration.

Our first ride was to Montefalco and Bevagna.  A lovely ride through the vineyards and to two charming towns. Next was to Assisi but Jim and Elliott started that day with a mountain bike ride up and over Mount Subasio.

Then Jim joined up with us to ride to Assisi.

Then our final ride with the full group was to Rasiglia.  This time we incorporated some mountain bike trails into the trip which Jim and I had never done before.  This included some river crossings, mud, loose gravely single track as well as some lovely shaded single and two track trails. Everyone made all the River crossings with ease except for me who opted to remove shoes and socks for the bigger crossing. Very bad and painful idea!   Of course I was the only one who had dry feet for the rest of the day! Overall, a great adventure ride!

Rasiglia was as delightful as ever.

Then lots of fun shopping, eating out at some great restaurants, doing some cooking at home, playing cards and having lots of laughs and conversation.

Then it is time to part ways.  Sadly, we walk to the train station with Anna and Brad and wish them farewell.  Tomorrow Elliott makes his exit.  It was a wonderful time and we feel so fortunate to have had our children with us for this week and a half which passed by way too quickly.

Just a little final thought or two.  First off we miss the kids.  It was so beautiful sharing time together and sharing some favorite places with them plus new experiences for us all.

The host of our apartment who is also a biker was so impressed with our travels and also including our kids on bike adventures.  I decided to share the blog link with him.  If you read the blog you will see references to this apartment and some photos of us enjoying it.  He sent me this final message after reading the blog.

I saw that you had a wonderful stay full of experiences . Surely Umbria with its nature, its art, its colors, its cuisine will be unforgettable for you and I am glad that our house has contributed to your happiness.
