La Francescana - Beautiful People on Vintage Bikes - Foligno

​We hurry to get going this morning because we think the bike event starts in the main piazza early.  We arrive to see bikers queuing up and it is an astonishing site.  People in vintage clothes, antique cars and of course old bicycles.  I won’t say much more except I will share the photos on hope that you can get the feeling of the event. 









I loved the team Titanic.


But my favorite was the big sausages.  Note the sausage string on his bike. 


The start was a spectacle.  All the bikers lined up and then the National anthem is played and everyone gave it their all and sang along.  It was so moving.  


Then the rain seemed to be holding off so we decided to go for a ride out in the valley.  Then about ten k or so in we start getting passed by the antique bikers. For the second time on this trip we find ourselves in the middle of a bike race!  


 As we are going along a biker from Tuscany is stopped fixing a flat tire and asks if we have a pump.  Yes, we do two in fact.  We help him but his problem is more than a lack of air.  So after a few failed attempts to keep the air in his tire, he asks passing bikers if they have an extra tube and lo and behold team sausage saves the day with a tube.  He is back on the road. 


We finish our ride and come back to the main piazza where the event started this morning and bikers are still coming in. We see our Tuscany biker arrive and he says thanks to us as he passes by.  Team sausage is already there.  What great fun it was!

Between House Viewings - In and Around Spello

​Our house hunting adventure continues with several more viewings.  We saw a variety of properties in different parts of the city. Most in our price range were too much of a project for us and those that weren’t a project we’re just too small for storing bikes and possibly having visitors at the same time.  So the clear winner by a long shot was the Piazza Kennedy property I talked about previously. It is in good condition, two real bedrooms and a third room that could be a small bedroom or a bike storage room. A real kitchen and a full updated bathroom and a half bath that maybe we can make into a full. So offer made and accepted and now we wait for the closing.  We will actually get into the apartment before we leave in November.  Again, the picture of our lovely apartment. Brac Island

​Today we head out to the first of our island visits. We leave our lodging (here is the little alley it was at the end of in Split).   We pedal to the ferry departure point which has ferries going to all the different islands and find the one for Brac. We are all surprised by how large it is and how many vehicles get loaded on board.   It is about an hour’s ride and we deboard in Supetar.  I am once again blown away by the clear turquoise water full of schools of fish.  We have a longish ride today with some serious climbing and the day is already feeling warm so we get on the road quickly.  So we don’t linger in Supetar but it is indeed lovely.   We soon enter Sutivan, another gorgeous seaside village.  We soon leave the coast and head inland which was the start of the days climbing.  We pass through some small villages and once again the island is covered with rock piles and rock walls from when ancient farmers cleared the fields for agricultura...

Into the Abruzzi - Joy and Suffering - Sora, Lazio to Opi, Abruzzo

​We were offered a nice Italian breakfast with a homemade cake in our prison accommodation.  You can see how beautifully they renovated -keeping the antique look with the modern amenities.  Our host checked in to see if everything was to our liking and gave us a warm farewell.  He wanted to get some pictures of us with our bikes before we left.  We learned that he had been the mayor of Sora in the past and had been to Toronto Canada as Sora and Toronto are sister cities.   Then on the road again. Although not terribly hot, the humidity was high.  It wasn’t too long before we had to go up this road.  Lincoln Gap, Vermont has nothing on Italy - just saying.  So that was my first bike push of at least a dozen today.  Thus the suffering referenced in the title.  Jim accidentally turned off his strava and lost at least a thousand feet but probably more like 2000 feet of climbing but it still registered 4000 feet of climbing.    Howe...
